Millfield Prep School
Millfield Prep School
Best Sports School in the UK
Millfield Prep School is a leading co-educational boarding and day school in the UK, located in 200 acres in Glastonbury, Somerset. Founded in 1945, the school offers 2-13 year-olds an exceptional, all-round educational experience that puts the individual at the centre. Our fundamental belief is that every child is unique and we help them discover their brilliance with the school’s outstanding facilities and teaching provision, immersing the pupils in limitless opportunities.
Sport
Millfield Prep has been named the Best Sports School in the UK for 11 out of 12 years. The school has an enviable reputation for sporting success, with over 24 sports on offer, taught by 16 Heads of Sport (including two Olympians), seven full-time specialist PE teachers and seven sports interns. They teach pupils a broad, balanced sports programme which is tailored to each individual and prepares children for a lifelong involvement in sport and physical activity, promoting confidence, health and wellbeing.
A comprehensive programme of physical and creative activities encourages all pupils to try something new and develop their talents. More than 90 pupils swim and over 100 private tennis lessons are delivered per week. Pupils benefit from outstanding facilities including 25m swimming pool, equestrian centre, tennis, hockey, netball, rugby, football and cricket pitches, an indoor tennis bubble and squash courts and the world-class facilities at Millfield including an Olympic-sized swimming pool, indoor cricket and golf centres and 400-metre athletics track.
Academic
Millfield Prep is a bold and innovative school that takes the lead in educational development. Small class sizes of 14 pupils on average enables each pupil to be stretched and supported and the school follows the UK National Curriculum.
Millfield Prep celebrates neurodiversity. Pupils with Additional Educational Needs (AEN) are supported through Millfield Prep’s Personalised Curriculum Centre (PCC), with personalised pathways, adopting a pupil centred approach, encouraging pupils to explore, engage, extend and connect. 30% of pupils receive support for AEN and pupils are supported by five PCC teachers and a further 90 teachers are PCC trained.
Opportunities
Millfield Prep offers vast, unparalleled and unrivalled opportunities. The school was awarded Independent School of the Year in 2022, for ‘exemplifying geographical size and other diversity in the sector’.
Over 23 subjects and 90 clubs and activities are on offer, taught by 120 teaching and coaching staff. Pupils can do it all and don’t have the choose.
The Arts at Millfield Prep gives every pupil the opportunity to explore being creative and expressing themselves through Music, Drama, Art or Dance. They build confidence through taking part in the annual school productions, performing in the multitude of music concerts and dance shows on offer or experimenting in art. All pupils from Year 3 to Year 8 have music timetabled on a weekly basis and every pupil is encouraged to either learn an instrument or sing in a choir. The purpose-built Music Department includes 22 rooms over two floors and a large 200-seat Recital Hall.
Boarding
Boarding at Millfield Prep is extensive, offering full, weekly and flexi boarding from ages 7 to 13. The school is home to 125 full-time boarders, with a further 40 additional flexi or occasional boarders. Boarding is a great way for children to develop their social skills and interact with lots of people from different countries and cultures. There is an exciting and extensive weekend boarding programme and everything is on campus which makes logistics easy. The children make the most of all the opportunities on offer at school, particularly the extra-curricular clubs and training that take place early morning and after school, such as squad swimming, tennis, golf, riding and music practice.
“The quality of boarding provision and care is excellent. The experience of boarding is warmly praised by many, and significantly enhances boarders' personal development, as they become self-reliant and tolerant of each other.” – ISI Inspection Report
International character
Millfield Prep is incredibly proud of its international character. Pupils from around the world, approximately 20 different nationalities, live together in boarding houses and share all aspects of school life, including sports and extra-curricular activities. When a new pupil arrives, they are warmly welcomed and introduced gently to the school routine. International boarders and their parents are invited to an Overseas Boarders’ Induction Day which takes place on the Saturday before the start of the new school year, giving them the opportunity to meet senior staff, learn more about the EAL (English as an Additional Language) programme and visit their boarding house. The school is a multi-faith community and religions other than Christianity are embraced with a spirit of tolerance and understanding.
Visit Millfield Prep at their next Open Day on Saturday 4 October 2025.
